Sophocles' great tragedy depicts the individual conscience in conflict with tyranny. Antigone (Juliet Stevenson), the daughter of Oedipus, defies a royal edict when one of her brothers kills the other. As a consequence, she is condemned to death by her uncle Creon (John Shrapnel), in spite of the warning given by the blind seer Teiresias (John Gielgud) that disaster will fall upon Creon himself. This BBC version is a robust modern translation by director Don Taylor.

Antigone is an arts and literature resource for classics from BBC Active.
